JM India Profile

Five years after her death, six Sisters of Jesus and Mary came to India (Agra) from France in 1842. We were the first Religious Congregation to set foot on Indian soil, via a long and perilous journey by sea. This first departure was to be followed many others.
Our Apostolic Mission is geared to the education of the young of all social classes and with predilection for the poor.

The Congregation is worldwide. In India, we are organized into three Provinces ie. Pune, Delhi and Vadodara. A total of 44 Communities serve in Colleges, Schools, School for mentally challenged children, Boarding Houses, Hostels, Prayer Houses, Mahila Mandals, Self-Help Groups, dispensaries, Health Centres, and Creches. Our outreach is to the urban Youth and rural Families.
Each Province has its administrative set up and personnel. As a temporary measure, the Formation of the young of the three Provinces is being held in Pune.

Jesus and Mary " Province Vision Statement ’’

We the Sisters of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, serving in India since 1842, through the inspiration provided by our Foundress Claudine Thevenet, from 1818, continue to be strengthened in our commitment towards the promotion of a more just and humane society in our country.

In the India of today, the pressures of casteism, communalism, poverty and exploitative structures make it imperative to equip our students, not only with intellectual skills but also with a set of attitudes imbued with social, moral and spiritual values.

Our commitment to this kind of Education is made in order to serve specifically the young and among them the poor. We also seek to make them conscious of their rights and to struggle with them in the face of ongoing oppression and exploitation.

We invite our Collaborators, Students and Parents to work with us in realising our challenging vision, of bringing about a New India.

Drawing inspiration from the Foudress of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, St. Claudine Thevenet, who said her Sisters, “Let us so form these children that they may be regarded as a blessing in every house they enter” we serve the cause of education in formal and non-formal ways.
